Dear Colleagues,
Sex and gender medicine represents a crucial step toward more precise and equitable healthcare. For decades, biomedical research and clinical practice have overlooked the influence of biological sex and sociocultural gender, resulting in knowledge gaps, biased evidence, and less effective prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies. Growing evidence now shows that sex and gender differences significantly influence health status and disease risk—from clinical presentation to disease progression and therapeutic response—underscoring the need for a more inclusive and multifaceted approach to human health.
This Special Issue, “Sex and Gender Medicine: New Horizons in Human Health and Disease,” aims to advance research that integrates sex- and gender-based perspectives across biomedical and clinical disciplines. It seeks to collect high-quality contributions exploring underlying biological mechanisms, gender-related determinants of health, and their implications across major disease areas. Particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary approaches, intersectionality, and innovative methodologies that improve inclusivity in research. Ultimately, the goal is to stimulate scientific dialogue, inform clinical practice and policy, and contribute to the development of more personalized and equitable healthcare systems.
