Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Aromatase (CYP19A1), a cytochrome P450 enzyme responsible for the conversion of androgens to estrogens, is a key player in the endocrine system. As understanding the complex role of aromatase in various pathologies is crucial for the development of targeted therapies, research is ongoing to unravel the complex interplay between aromatase, estrogen and different pathologies.

Moreover, it is important to introduce new players into this picture, the so-called endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), exogenous substances interfering with the functioning of the endocrine system. Some EDCs can affect aromatase activity, leading to disturbances in hormonal balance and potentially causing a range of adverse health effects. 

The aim of this special issue is to collect original papers and reviews that add new knowledge to the following potential topics:

  • Structural and functional studies on aromatase
  • Regulation of aromatase expression and activity by redox partners, regulatory proteins and post-translational modifications
  • Role of aromatase in hormone-dependent pathologies
  • Impact of EDCs on aromatase expression and activity
  • Aromatase as a drug target and novel chemical leads for its inhibition.
