Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The most recent viral has now passed. There is now a pressing need for the rapid development of effective and safe therapies for widespread diseases and, in particular, for aggressive cancers, for which delays in diagnosis and treatment may lead to deaths that would otherwise be preventable. In the development of new therapies, current areas of interest include the effectiveness of drug development-related strategies, entirely new therapeutic molecules, new drug delivery systems, and advances in personalized and digital medicine. There is also a growing need to integrate diverse scientific disciplines and industrial activities that address these different aspects of drug research.

Volume 1.0 of the Special Issue “Novel Strategies in the Development of New Therapies, Drug Substances and Drug Carriers” was highly successful, comprising 21 published papers. Volume 2.0, dedicated to the Interdisciplinary Conference on Drug Sciences (ACCORD 2022), was equally successful, with 25 papers, followed by Volume 3.0, which included 15 publications. Volumes 1.0–3.0 were also published as MDPI printed books

Due to the continuing interest of authors, we are reopening this topic as Volume 4.0 in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (ISSN 1422-0067, IF 4.9, JCR Category Q1). This fourth Special Issue aims to promote research in fields contributing to the conception and development of new drug substances and drug formulations. As with the previous volumes, this Special Issue is not limited to any specific aspect of drug development. Instead, it seeks to cover the entire drug development process at the molecular level, in line with the aims and scope of the journal.

Topics include, but are not limited to, the identification of the molecular targets for new drugs, evaluation of drug–protein interactions, modeling and optimization of functional activity, pre-formulation studies, pharmaceutical carrier development, and preclinical research.

We would also like to draw your attention to the Interdisciplinary Conference on Drug Sciences, ACCORD 2026, to be held in Warsaw, Poland, from 27 to 29 May 2026 (https://accord.wum.edu.pl/). All participants of the ACCORD 2026 Conference will have the opportunity to submit a conference paper to this Special Issue. The manuscripts will undergo the journal’s standard peer review process.

All interested researchers are invited to submit original articles or review papers related to the topic of this Special Issue, in accordance with the “Aims and Scope”, “Instructions for Authors”, and the keywords listed below.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
