Pneumonia and Sepsis: From Molecular Pathways to Translational Medicine
This special issue belongs to the section “Molecular Pathology, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Sepsis and severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia represent two potentially life-threatening clinical conditions worldwide. Although these conditions could affect individuals of any age, it is well-recognized that the physiological age-related weakening of immune re-sponses is a crucial player in directing disease evolution towards negative outcomes. Regardless of the age of onset, both conditions are characterized by a deregulated hyperinflammatory re-sponse due to an overstimulation of the immune system. Despite the continuous progress in the medical field, these conditions still represent a great clinical challenge, deeply affecting healthcare and economic systems worldwide. Furthermore, both pneumonia and sepsis could display long-term effects, with a strong impact on survivors’ quality of life. In this scenario, the ability to identify early on the most at-risk patients and the quick identification of the best thera-peutic approach based on the individual patient’s clinical manifestations of the disease are of paramount importance and deserve constant consideration in the scientific community.
The aim of this Special Issue is to collect updated information about the molecular mechanisms involved in pneumonia and/or sepsis pathophysiology. Research papers dealing with novel bi-omarkers’ identification and validation, novel therapeutic target discovery, as well as the molec-ular basis of currently available or experimental therapeutic approaches are welcome to be sub-mitted to this Special Issue. Authors are welcome to submit their reviews and original articles.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
