Advances in Metabolomics for Animal Health and Nutrition
This special issue belongs to the section “Bioactives and Nutraceuticals“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The growing application of metabolomics in animal science is reshaping our ability to understand and optimize animal health, nutrition, and production systems. This Special Issue, Advances in Metabolomics for Animal Health and Nutrition, compiles innovative research and comprehensive reviews that showcase the power of metabolomic technologies in investigating biochemical processes in animals. Metabolomics, by enabling high-throughput and detailed profiling of small-molecule metabolites, provides unique insights into the physiological and metabolic responses of animals to dietary inputs, disease conditions, environmental stressors, and microbiome dynamics.
The contributions to this Special Issue span a wide range of animal species, including livestock, poultry, aquaculture species, and companion animals. Featured studies explore biomarker discovery for early disease detection, evaluation of nutrient utilization efficiency, assessment of metabolic responses to feed additives, and elucidation of host–microbiome interactions. Advanced analytical platforms such as mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are leveraged alongside multivariate data analysis and systems biology approaches to interpret complex metabolic signatures.
Furthermore, this Special Issue emphasizes the integration of metabolomics with other omics disciplines, including genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of animal biology. Such integrative approaches are crucial for developing precision nutrition strategies, improving animal welfare, and promoting sustainable animal production.
Together, the articles in this Special Issue illustrate the significant role of metabolomics as both a diagnostic and predictive tool in animal health and nutrition. By bridging fundamental metabolic research with practical applications, this collection highlights current achievements and points toward future directions in the field. The advances presented here will support the development of innovative, evidence-based practices that benefit animal productivity, health management, and environmental sustainability in modern agricultural and veterinary contexts.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
