Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The process of digitization in society is unstoppable, and this has repercussions both in the ways of working and in those of consuming. Sports and physical activity contexts do not escape the digitizing trend: the consequences at the economic, psychosocial, and labor levels have already begun to be studied. However, there are still many unknowns to clarify, which would allow better management of digitized sports services.

From an economic perspective, the digitization of the sports sector has had an impact on new business models and new job opportunities. In fact, apps and digital platforms have emerged that have helped sports professionals to continue generating income. From a psychosocial point of view, the relationship of trainers with their work and with the user has varied substantially: are they prepared for the technological challenge? What consequences does telepressure have on their wellbeing and job performance? What strategies are useful in this context to establish engagement with their organization and/or their clients? From the users’ side, what do they expect from a digital sports service? Which factors, inherent to digital tools, influence the quality of service they perceive?

There are also questions related to labor to be answered: have work systems changed? What changes are necessary in labor policies to face these challenges in the sports sector? What impact does the technological training of an organization and its employees have on organizational results? Is it possible to have technological systems that meet the needs of even non-digitally skilled users?

Pau Gasol announced his retirement on 5 October 2021. Subsequently, a number of users virtually reacted. Twitter is one of the most popular social media platforms, with more than 368 million active users, generating large-scale social data. This study used data from Twitter for analyzing social sensing related to an individual brand, Pau Gasol’s retirement announcement, from a quantitative and qualitative content analysis perspective. Pau Gasol’s farewell can be considered a unique event to which many people are emotionally attached, providing a great opportunity for understanding sports virtual ecosystems. A total of 2089 tweets in the English language were recovered from Tuesday 5 October 2021 at 3:00 to Thursday 7 October 2021 at 23:59, Greenwich Mean Time +00:00 time zone. During this time, posts were observed to be mainly influential during and right after Pau Gasol’s ceremony. The tweets that created more impact were published by news sources or by sports reporters. Lastly, the themes that emerged showed that the Los Angeles Lakers and the NBA were the two most important milestones in Pau Gasol’s career. The data can be used to detect potential areas of controversy or other issues to be addressed in order to preserve the athlete’s public image. These results are considered of interest for reaching better knowledge of sport virtual environments through social sensing, supporting the idea of users acting as sensors. Full article

The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties, in terms of validity and reproducibility, of the Golf Course Quality Scale (GCQS) in the Spanish golf course context. The GCQS is a scale that measures the quality of a golf course perceived by its users. It is comprised of 22 five-point Likert scale items, ranging from 1 (disagree) to 5 (totally agree). The items were grouped into five dimensions: services, etiquette, facilities, golf courses, and staff. A translated and adapted version of the Australian CQS questionnaire was administered to a total of 401 federated golf players in the Region of Murcia (RM). The margin of error was 4.9% with a confidence level of 95%. Of the total sample, 88.5% were men and 11.5% were women. The participants were between the ages of 18 and 80 (M = 54.1, SD = 14.3). Following an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to determine the suitability of the proposed items and the factorial structure of the scale, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed using structural equations under the maximum likelihood extraction method. This assessed the fit of the model and its internal consistency, with values above 0.79. In conclusion, the validity and reliability of this psychometric scale for the purposes of evaluating the quality of golf courses perceived by their users have been verified. The results confirm that the scale is a useful tool for golf course research and management. Full article
