Dear Colleagues,
The development and maintenance of food quality present a growing challenge, involving the need to ensure food supply while reducing environmental impacts and minimizing postharvest losses. In this context, the development of sustainable solutions has become essential in optimizing preservation technologies. Fresh fruits and vegetables exhibit an active metabolism and high perishability due to physiological processes, enzymatic reactions, and microbial growth, requiring efficient technologies to maintain quality throughout the production and supply chain.
Innovative packaging has emerged as a key strategy to extend shelf life and preserve product quality. Among the main approaches, active, smart, and biodegradable packaging stands out, particularly types based on biopolymers derived from renewable sources, representing a new generation of sustainable materials. These technologies include films with antimicrobial agents, oxygen absorbers, moisture regulators, and controlled-release systems for active compounds.
Additionally, the use of modified atmospheres, nanomaterials, and coatings with natural compounds has demonstrated high effectiveness in maintaining sensory and nutritional attributes. Therefore, research in this field should integrate technological innovation, sustainability, and food safety, contributing to more efficient and environmentally responsible postharvest systems.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Horticulturae is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
