The Legacy of Carlo Cercignani: From Kinetic Theory to Turbulence Modeling

This international conference is dedicated to the memory of Carlo Cercignani, ten years after his death.

Carlo Cercignani, who was one of the world’s leading experts of the Boltzmann equation in kinetic theory, taught and carried out his research for decades in the Department of Mathematics at the Politecnico di Milano.

The conference aims to bring together different areas of kinetic theory spanning from mathematical theory to numerical analysis, physical and engineering modeling, to which Carlo Cercignani made significant contributions. Also an additional research area, characterizing the scientific work of Carlo Cercignani, will be addressed: the development of turbulence models.

Therefore, the scientific program of the congress will highlight the breadth of interests and skills developed by Carlo Cercignani during his career, encouraging contributions on the following topics:

(a) Mathematical and numerical methods for kinetic equations;

(b) applications of the kinetic theory to the microdevices;

(c) kinetic modeling of gas mixtures and polyatomic gases;

(d) kinetic models for granular media;

(e) applications of kinetic theory in socio-economic and life sciences;

(f) theory and applications of the relativistic Boltzmann equation;

(g) Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and Lattice Boltzmann numerical methods;

(h) statistical mechanics and dynamical systems;

(i) turbulence modeling.
