Feature Review Papers in Fermentation Process Design 2023

Dear Colleagues,

For a long time, many microorganisms have been known for their capability to synthesize both small and large molecules that are of tremendous benefits to humankind. Thousands of years ago, ethanol and methane, which are two of many microbial products, were discovered and used by humans as a beverage and a fuel source for heating and cooking, respectively. However, fully realizing the potential of microorganisms as manufacturing bio-factories could not occur until industrial fermentation processes were developed and optimized by applied microbiologists and biochemical engineers. Perhaps two of the earliest examples of these achievements should be attributed to the large-scale production of penicillin in the deep-tank fermenters in the United States toward the end of the Second World War and the launch of the fermentation industry for amino acid production in Japan after the war. Since then, many industrial fermentation processes have been developed and implemented, which employ a wide array of biocatalysts including bacteria, yeast, microalgae, and mammalian and plant cell cultures.   

This Special Issue aims to collect high-quality review papers in all areas of fermentation process design. We encourage you, as researchers from these and related fields, to contribute review papers highlighting the latest development and design of fermentation processes, or to invite relevant experts and your colleagues to do so. Full-length comprehensive reviews will be preferred.

All submitted manuscripts will be subjected to a thorough peer-review process conducted by our invited reviewers from the industry and academia. We will maintain a high standard for our entire review process but we will also try to make efforts for speedy publication of accepted manuscripts.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Fermentation is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
