It is my great pleasure to invite you to submit your most recent research to this Special Issue “Circular economy in low-carbon transition”.
The circular economy represents a fundamental pillar for modern business models and sustainable development targets: the mandatory claim “reduce, reuse, recycle” is the answer to the global challenge of natural resource depletion and waste increase. At the same time, energy production and consumption play a key role in the face of challenges of industrialization and rapid population growth: with the depletion of traditional fossil fuels, renewable and low-carbon energy sources have attracted more and more attention for their advantages such as high renewability, great development potential, and potential emissions-mitigation. However, to implement the circular economy and low-carbon transition, the choices that shift the environmental burdens rather than reduce them must be carefully avoided, using a life cycle approach. The international community – including scientists, policymakers, industries, and markets – must develop new tools and competencies to generate environmental and socio-economic values from a comprehensive perspective.
This Special Issue will outline a roadmap of circular economy in the low-carbon transition, through the exchange of experiences in different contexts with both environmental and socio-economic points of view. Qualitative and quantitative measurements in resources/energy utilization, multi-criteria impact assessment in energy systems, and closing the loop strategies and initiatives represent valuable contributions for this Special Issue.
In particular, we encourage submissions of research articles, case studies, and review articles related but not limited to the following:
- Policies and metrics to support a circular economy and low-carbon transition

- Multi-criteria analysis of energy systems
- Multi-criteria analysis of reuse/recycle processes

Title: A Bibliometric Analysis of Carbon Labeling Scheme in the Period of 2007-2019

Abstract: Carbon labelling scheme enable consumers to be aware of carbon emissions regarding products or services, thus to help change their purchasing behaviours. This study provides a bibliometric analysis to review the research progress of carbon labeling scheme during the period of 2007-2019, in order to provide insight into its future development. The number of publications, the countries of publications, the authors, the institutions, and the highly cited paper were included for statistical analysis. Citespace software package was used to visualize the national collaboration, keywords co-appearance and aggregation. The result showed as follows: (1) There were 208 publications in the pre-defined period, which showed a gradual increase, with a peak occurring in 2016; (2) The carbon labeling scheme was mainly applied to the grocery products, and gradually emerged in construction, tourism, and chemical industry. (3) The existing studies mainly focused on examination of utility of the carbon labeling scheme, by conducting surveys to investigate individual’s perception, preference, willingness to pay etc. (4) The future research would be the optimization of life cycle assessment for labeling accreditation, improvement of labeling visualization for better expression, and normalization of various environmental label to promote sustainable consumption.
Title: Early Education on Energy Efficiency for Socioeconomic Development While Keeping CO2 Concentration Controlled

Abstract: Early education is critical to improve efficiency of the use of energy resources. The purpose of the study is to explore the feasibility of Interactive Cross-Border Classes to increase awareness on energy efficiency on middle school students. We designed and tested an Interactive Cross-Border class between Chilean and Peruvian 8th grade classes. The classes were synchronously connected and all students answered open questions on an online platform. Some of the questions were designed to check conceptual understanding while others asked suggestions in order to develop their economies while keeping CO2 air concentration at acceptable levels. On real time, the teacher reviewed students´ written answers and concepts maps automatically generated from them. Students did online peer review of the suggestions. This is part of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) STEM Education project on Energy Efficiency using APEC data bases. We found great student engagement, where they discussed not only cross cutting nature of energy, but also its relations to socioeconomic development and to CO2 emissions, and the need to work together to improve energy efficiency. In conclusion, Interactive Cross-Border classes are a feasible education alternative, with potential as a scalable public policy strategy to improve energy efficiency awareness on the population.
