We are pleased to introduce a Special Issue of Energies on "Battery Energy Storage for Operational Management of Electrical Networks and Micro-grids" and to invite interested authors to upload original contributions on related topics. The aim of this Special Issue is to collect articles that report on the latest advances about the application of battery energy storage in the electrical energy systems, or review the relevant state of the art.
Battery energy storage has emerged as a promising way to enhance the operation of electrical energy systems, in distribution systems and micro-grid applications, under multiple points of view. Beyond the traditional application to providing backup power in case of lack of supply, the main applications of the batteries in distribution systems are found for smoothing the net power variations at the network nodes (to enable better integration of intermittent renewable energy generation), and for improving the grid services (with up and down frequency regulation capacity, or ramp support). In micro-grids, battery storage is embedded into operational optimization strategies for energy management, through the determination of suitable charging and discharging strategies that fit the specified technical, economic and environmental objectives. Furthermore, also in case of temporary micro-grids (such as military and humanitarian) the use of hybrid system comprising batteries and renewable energy could help the rational use of the energy.
Open research issues involve enhanced battery models (also including the impact of the deterioration in idle mode) and the definition of the limits of operation of batteries in dynamic regimes (with the related impact on battery reliability and lifetime). For the exploitation of battery storage in grid applications, batteries are one of the storage alternatives for improving the electrical system operation, which has to be assessed also to establish whether they are more convenient than others, being the battery cost one of the major drawback for their adoption.
