Urban Electrification and Energy Efficiency: Innovations for Sustainable Power Systems

Dear Colleagues,

Urban areas are becoming central to the global energy transition, with electrification advancing rapidly through the expansion of distributed generation, electric mobility, building electrification, and microgrid deployment. These developments reshape how electricity is produced, delivered, and consumed in dense urban environments, offering opportunities for reduced emissions, higher efficiency, and enhanced resilience. At the same time, they introduce complex challenges related to grid congestion, the variability of renewable sources, increased penetration of inverter-based resources, and the need for coordinated planning, supervision, automation, and control across multiple voltage levels. This Special Issue aims to gather advanced research, methodologies, and case studies related to sustainable urban electrification. Topics of interest include the following areas:

• Power system planning for high-electrification scenarios;
• Supervision, automation, and control of urban power systems;
• Electric vehicle charging infrastructure, V2G, and fleet integration;
• Building electrification, efficiency, and demand flexibility;
• Microgrids, DER coordination, and multi-energy systems;
• Protection adaptation for inverter-rich urban networks;
• Reliability, resilience, and power quality in urban contexts;
• AI tools, data analytics, digital twins, and RT simulation;
• Storage, DMS, and flexibility markets;
• Regulatory, economic, and policy aspects.

The goal of this Special Issue is to provide a comprehensive view of emerging solutions that enable efficient, reliable, and low-carbon power systems for future urban environments.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
