Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Electrical machines, power electronic converters and drive systems form the cornerstone of modern industrial and transportation applications, enabling efficient energy conversion, precise motion control and reliable operation across a vast array of sectors. From industrial automation and renewable energy systems to electric vehicles and railway traction, these technologies underpin critical infrastructure and emerging mobility solutions. Given their pivotal role, ensuring the reliability, safety and operational efficiency of these systems is paramount to avoiding economic losses, downtime and safety hazards.
In this context, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis serve as indispensable enabling tools, closely tied to the design, operation and maintenance of electrical machines, power electronic converters and drives.
Recent advancements in sensing technologies, signal processing and data-driven methods have significantly enhanced the ability to detect, classify and predict faults in these systems.
This Special Issue seeks to showcase the latest research and industrial applications focused on condition monitoring and fault diagnosis as applied specifically to electrical machines, power electronic converters and drive systems. We invite contributions that address innovative methodologies, experimental validations and real-world implementations aimed at improving the robustness, accuracy and practicality of fault detection and diagnostic techniques in these domains.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of power transformers and rotating electrical machines.
- Fault detection and diagnosis in power electronic converters for electrical drives, including open-circuit and short-circuit switch faults, capacitor ageing and gate-driver faults.
- Online and offline condition monitoring techniques for electrical drives.
- Case studies and real-world implementations in manufacturing, power generation (e.g., wind and hydro), railway electric traction and electric and hybrid vehicles.
Although this Special Issue accepts interdisciplinary research, the core focus of every submitted manuscript must remain within the field of energy systems, conversion efficiency, or power electronics applications. Manuscripts dealing solely with general mechanical fault diagnosis or control theory without a clear energy-related context are outside the scope of this Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
