Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to submit your research to this Special Issue, “State-of-the-Art Research in Advanced Materials for Energy Storage Applications.”

In the past few decades, the need for the development of alternative energy conversion and storage systems has increased dramatically due to rapid global economic growth, environmental issues, and the depletion of fossil fuels. As two kinds of pollution-free clean energy, light and electricity have attracted increasing interest from the scientific community.

Advanced materials are of interest from the perspectives of both scientific research and mechanical manufacturing fields, especially for energy storage applications. Their suitability for such applications is attributed to their unique properties, such as their composition and large surface area, as well as their tunable porous structure, particle size, and surface chemistry. Depending on the methodology used for their synthesis, advanced materials will continue to play a critical role in dealing with global challenges.

The articles presented in this Special Issue will cover various topics, including, but not limited to, photoelectrocatalysis materials, solar cells, solar photoelectrocatalysis degradation, energy storage devices (batteries and electrochemical supercapacitors), and these materials’ synthesis, properties, and applications.

We invite authors to contribute research articles or reviews on the broad range of topics addressed above.

The randomness of the power supply side and the load side of comprehensive energy systems is increasingly prominent. It is very difficult to meet demand through traditional planning methods. To solve this problem, this paper explores the coordinated planning of a power system under uncertain characteristics using the multilinear Monte Carlo method. The uncertain characteristic model and probability density function of the system’s power supply side and load side are established. Taking the optimal operating cost and the maximum wind power consumption as the system planning objectives, a system coordination planning scheme is established, and it is solved by multilinear Monte Carlo simulation. The superiority of this method is verified by taking the modified IEEE 39-bus test system as an example. This method can provide a reference for system planning. Full article

The integrated energy system is a complex energy system that involves multi-stakeholder and multi-energy coordinated operations. The key to improving its scale and sustainable development is to construct a better-integrated energy system dispatching method which is suitable for the power market. However, the randomness of the supply side and load side of the integrated energy system brings further challenges to system planning and scheduling. Therefore, the optimal scheduling method of an integrated energy system considering the uncertainty of supply and demand in the market environment is studied in this paper. Firstly, the uncertainty models of the supply side and load side of the integrated energy system are established. Then, the optimal scheduling model based on robust chance constraint is established. The reserve capacity constraint is set as a chance constraint with a certain confidence level to maximize the system profit in the power market. Finally, simulations show that the proposed method not only guarantees the robustness of the system but also improves the economy of the system. The method provides ideas for exploring the development mechanism and strategy of integrated energy systems in the electricity market environment. Full article

A large number of application cases show that air filter media are easy to fail under extreme conditions of high humidity, haze, rain and snow, thus seriously affecting the energy efficiency of gas turbines. To study the impact of humidity on the dust-holding performance of filter media, three typical filter media applied for gas turbines with a similar efficiency are selected, and their dust-holding performance is investigated at a humidity of 30%, 60% and 75%, respectively. The results showed that the dust-holding pressure drop curves of three filter media were divided into two phases. With the increase of humidity, the increasing pressure drop rate of three filter media decreased. The pressure drop synthetic fiber, glass fiber composite filter media and the synthetic fiber composite filter media with a sandwich structure were more significantly affected by humidity during the filter cake filtration phase. Under the same conditions, filter media with a sandwich structure had the highest dust-holding capacity, while the electrospun fiber composite filter material had the lowest one. The dustcake formed on the surface of the filter media that consist of a pure synthetic fiber or a small amount of plant fiber is significantly affected by humidity. Full article

Additives for anaerobic digestion (AD) can play a significant role in optimizing the process by increasing biogas production, stabilizing the system, and improving digestate quality. The role of additives largely boils down to, among others, enhancing direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between microbial communities, resulting in improved syntrophic interactions, adsorption of toxic substances that may inhibit microbial activity, improving microbial activity, and increasing process stability and accelerating the decomposition of complex organic materials, thereby increasing the rate of hydrolysis. Through the aforementioned action, additives can significantly affect AD performance. The function of these materials varies, from enhancing microbial activity to maintaining optimal conditions and protecting the system from inhibitors. The choice of additives should be carefully tailored to the specific needs and conditions of the digester to maximize benefits and ensure sustainability. In light of these considerations, this paper characterizes the most commonly used additives and their combinations based on a comprehensive review of recent scientific publications, including a report on the results of conducted studies. The publication features chapters that describe carbon-based conductive materials, metal oxide nanomaterials, trace metal, and biological additives, including enzymes and microorganisms. It concludes with the chapters summarising reports on various additives and discussing their functional properties, as well as advantages and disadvantages. The presented review is a substantive and concise analysis of the latest knowledge on additives for the AD process. The application of additives in AD is characterized by great potential; hence, the subject matter is very current and future-oriented. Full article
