Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid advancement of generative AI has opened new frontiers in education, while game-based learning has proven to be a powerful approach for engaging students and personalizing learning experiences. This Special Issue aims to explore the synergistic integration of these two domains, focusing on how they can complement each other to enhance educational interventions on a large scale.
Generative AI offers unprecedented capabilities in content creation, adaptation, and personalization, yet there remains skepticism regarding its effective and ethical implementation in education. Game-based learning, with its inherent adaptability and engagement potential, offers opportunities for creating equitable and accessible personalized learning experiences. By merging these elements, we can potentially unlock new approaches to address individual learning requirements, fostering more effective and enjoyable educational experiences.
We invite submissions that propose innovative strategies, present empirical research, or offer critical analyses addressing one or more of the following questions:
- Is generative AI ready to transform game-based learning? If so, how?
- What ethical issues would generative AI create when combined with educational games, and how can they be addressed?
- How can the integration of generative AI and game-based learning enhance accessibility, equity, inclusion, and diversity in educational contexts?
- What are the technical challenges for designing educational games that use generative AI content, and what are potential solutions?
- What is the role of the educator/teacher in spaces where such AI-based games are used and what kinds of professional development are required in these contexts?
We welcome a range of manuscript types, including but not limited to the following: systematic reviews; innovative strategies and conceptual frameworks; empirical studies (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods); case studies and pilot implementations; and critical analyses and theoretical papers. The goal is to foster a comprehensive understanding of the potential and challenges of integrating generative AI with game-based learning to create more equitable, effective, and engaging educational experiences.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Education Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs).
