Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Emergency and acute care radiology increasingly relies on advanced imaging techniques and artificial intelligence (AI) to support rapid, accurate diagnosis in time-sensitive clinical scenarios.

Advanced imaging modalities, including dual-energy and photon-counting computed tomography (CT), accelerated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), have expanded diagnostic capabilities in emergency settings. Concurrently, AI applications encompassing deep learning algorithms, radiomics analysis, and machine learning models are being investigated for both interpretive tasks, such as fracture detection and acute pathology identification, and non-interpretive functions, including workflow prioritisation and image quality optimisation.

The integration of these technological advances holds potential to address common challenges in emergency radiology, such as high case volumes and the need for rapid triage. However, successful clinical translation requires rigorous validation, the standardisation of methodologies, and seamless integration into existing workflows.

This Special Issue will collect original contributions on advanced imaging techniques and AI applications in emergency body radiology, with emphasis on methodological rigor and clinical applicability.

We welcome original research articles, reviews, and technical notes covering (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Dual-energy and photon-counting CT applications in emergency imaging;
  • AI-based acceleration techniques for emergency MRI protocols;
  • Contrast-enhanced ultrasound and ultrasound radiomics in acute settings;
  • Deep learning models for fracture detection and acute pathology identification;
  • AI and radiomics applications in acute oncological and non-oncological conditions;
  • Workflow optimisation and non-interpretive AI applications;
  • Clinical validation and real-world implementation studies.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Diagnostics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
