Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Composite coatings have emerged as one of the most promising developments in multi-material systems over recent decades. They are designed to address the growing global demand for high-performance surface protection in a wide range of industrial applications. By integrating multiple material phases, these coatings significantly enhance overall performance, offering improved thermo-mechanical integrity, chemical resistance, metallurgical and tribological behavior, biological compatibility, thermal stability, and high strength-to-weight ratios. Owing to these superior properties, composite coatings play a critical role in extending the service life of base metals operating under harsh environments or demanding conditions.
Composite coatings are particularly well-suited for a broad range of functional and structural applications across diverse industries. Prominent examples include their use in aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, construction, defense, power generation, transportation, marine, electronics, and biomedical sectors.
Despite their advantages, composite coatings still present several challenges, including the attainment of defect-free microstructures, uniform distribution of reinforcement phases, and strong interfacial bonding between the matrix and reinforcements. These factors critically influence the mechanical properties and overall performance of the coatings and are highly sensitive to processing parameters.
This Special Issue provides an open-access, multidisciplinary platform for the publication of both original research and review articles on the development and application of composite coatings for functional surfaces. It aims to keep readers informed of the latest advances in fabrication techniques and the high-performance applications of functional composite coatings.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:
- Fabrication of composite coatings
- Influence of reinforcement phases
- Innovative composite compositions
- Microstructure-property relationships
- Hybrid composite coatings
- Surface composite coating technologies (such as additive manufacturing, thermal and cold spraying, electroplating, physical vapor deposition, friction stir processing, casting variations, etc.)
- Performance and properties (including mechanical, tribological, and corrosion behaviors)
- Progress in related coating deposition processes
- Industrial applications
- Modeling approaches
We look forward to receiving your contributions!

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
