Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Advances in coating technologies and surface engineering play a central role in improving the performance, reliability and functionality of materials used in modern engineering applications. Thin film coatings and surface-modified systems are key enabling technologies in fields such as electronics, optoelectronics, energy devices, sensors and advanced manufacturing, where precise control of surface properties is essential.
In recent years, significant progress has been made in thin film deposition techniques and surface processing routes, including plasma-based methods, solution-based processing and hybrid approaches. These developments have enabled the design of functional and composite coatings with tailored optical, electrical and structural properties, as well as improved adhesion, stability and interface performance. At the same time, advances in surface and interface characterization have deepened the understanding of structure–property relationships in coating systems.
This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for researchers working on the processing, design and characterization of advanced coatings and thin films. Particular emphasis is placed on functional thin film coatings, emerging and advanced coating deposition techniques like plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), surface and interface engineering and the development of hybrid or composite coating systems. Contributions addressing experimental, theoretical and application-oriented research are all welcome.
We welcome the submission of original research articles, short communications and review papers focusing on coating deposition techniques, surface modification strategies, microstructural, optical and electrical characterization and emerging applications of coatings in electronic, optoelectronic and advanced material systems.
The Special Issue on "Emerging Trends in Thin Film Coatings and Surface Engineering" brings together contributions from scientists and engineers working on coating materials and processes, surface modification, characterization techniques and the functional performance of thin films and coatings in advanced applications.
We look forward to receiving your submissions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
