Dear Colleagues,
We would like to invite you to submit your work to this Special Issue on “Advances in Sustainable Food Packaging for Biofilm Control: Biopolymers, Edible Films and Coatings”.
The persistent and insidious challenge of biofilm-mediated contamination represents a formidable frontier in food safety. As structured communities of microorganisms encased in a self-produced polymeric matrix, biofilms exhibit dramatically enhanced resistance to conventional cleaning, sanitization, and antibiotic treatments. When these microbial fortresses establish themselves on food contact surfaces, processing equipment, or even on the food product itself, they become a continuous source of contamination, leading to significant food spoilage, food waste, and the transmission of foodborne pathogens.
Key areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
> Packaging materials;
> Novel bio-nanocomposites and their antimicrobial potential;
> Essential oil nanoemulsions;
> Smart or intelligent packaging systems;
> Synergistic combinations of natural antimicrobials within coatings;
> Release mechanisms of active compounds from packaging systems.
This Special Issue seeks to consolidate cutting-edge research that bridges the gap between the urgent need for biofilm control in the food chain and the imperative for environmental stewardship. By leveraging the unique properties of biopolymers, edible films, and coatings, the field is moving toward a future where food packaging is not only a guardian against contamination but also a testament to a circular and sustainable bioeconomy.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
