Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue is devoted to an overview of recent advances in the design, fabrication, and characterisation of solid biomaterials, with particular emphasis on surface modification strategies, functional coatings’ deposition, and their impact on mechanical properties, tribological wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. The objective of this Issue is to provide a comprehensive platform for research addressing the development of advanced materials that have been engineered to withstand the complex physiological environment and to promote safe and durable integration with biological tissues.

The study of metals and alloy-based materials and implants for tools/instruments, and orthopaedic, dental, and cardiovascular applications is of primary interest, particularly in the context of surface modification. This modification is imperative in order to improve mechanical and tribological properties, enhance corrosion-wear resistance, minimise ion release, and promote favourable biological responses. Consequently, submissions addressing nanostructured bioactive thin-films, or hybrid coatings with antibacterial, biofunctional, or drug-releasing properties are strongly encouraged.

The Issue also seeks contributions exploring additive manufacturing and 3D printing of biomaterials, with a view to enabling the fabrication of customised implants and scaffolds with precisely engineered architectures and surface functionalities. In line with this, research on novel/advanced processing routes such as plasma-assisted coating techniques, sol–gel deposition, electrochemical surface modification, and hybrid additive approaches will also be valued.

Furthermore, studies emphasising cell–material interactions and tissue integration are of central importance, as they underpin the clinical success of functionalised biomaterials. By integrating advances in materials science, surface chemistry and bioengineering, this Special Issue aims to showcase innovative materials, surfaces, and coatings that bridge the gap between laboratory research and practical biomedical applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
