Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Tribological aspects are specific to engineering activity and must be taken into account at all phases of technological equipment development: conception/design, manufacturing, operation, maintenance. Theoretical and experimental developments of tribological applications are vast and have effects on the wear of technical systems. The absence or presence of lubricants, operation in corrosive or abrasive environments, and the application of protective or lubricating coatings are some examples specific to current applications in the machine building industry, the chemical industry, the oil and gas industry, the medical and pharmaceutical industry, the automotive and aerospace industry, the road and railway infrastructure industry, etc. Current engineering concerns are directed towards finding modern solutions to improve the tribological behavior of materials with direct effects on increasing the durability and energy efficiency of technical systems.
Tribological research is practically unlimited; areas of research include: direct contact of mechanical components, behavior of friction couplings in the presence of lubricants, development of nanolubricants or nanocoatings, use of protective coatings (metals, polymers or nanomaterials), effect of corrosive environments on tools or equipment, etc.
In this Special Issue, we intend to include articles on the following topics:
- Theoretical, experimental research, case studies, technical applications on the tribological behavior of tools, mechanical mechanisms and technical/technological equipment;
- Surface protection processes through various coatings or through interventions on the operating environment;
- Developments in the field of lubricants and corrosion inhibitors;
- Theoretical and experimental research on the interaction of technological tools with processed materials (cutting, forging, asphalt processing, concrete manufacturing, etc.);
- Modeling/simulation of tribological phenomena with applications in technical systems;
- Modern methods and techniques for testing materials, coatings and lubricants.
We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
