In the rapidly advancing field of molecular biology, nanomedicine has emerged as a transformative frontier, offering an unprecedented capability to interface with biological systems at the molecular and genetic levels. Beyond simple drug delivery, modern nanomedicine focuses on the precise modulation of cellular pathways, gene expression, and protein interactions. As traditional pharmacological approaches often struggle with molecular barriers and off-target effects, engineered nanoplatforms provide a sophisticated solution to deliver therapeutic payloads directly to their intended molecular targets, thereby enhancing therapeutic efficacy and reducing systemic toxicity.
This Special Issue aims to explore the intersection of molecular biology and bio-nanotechnology, highlighting how advanced delivery systems—such as extracellular vesicles (EVs), lipid nanoparticles, and hybrid polymeric assemblies—can be engineered to overcome complex biological hurdles. We seek to provide a comprehensive overview of the molecular mechanisms governing nano–bio interactions, including how these platforms influence signal transduction, intracellular trafficking, and the molecular microenvironment in oncology, as well as in inflammatory, neurological, and regenerative medicine. By bridging basic molecular research to translational nanomedicine, this collection strives to showcase the next generation of biologically informed therapeutics.
The scope of this Special Issue covers broad themes in molecular nanomedicine, specified in the following areas:
- Molecular Engineering of Smart Nanomaterials: Design of stimuli-responsive systems that react to molecular triggers such as pH, specific enzymes, or redox gradients.
- Gene and Nucleic Acid Modulation: Molecular mechanisms of mRNA, siRNA, and CRISPR/Cas9 delivery for gene silencing, editing, and protein replacement therapies.
- Molecular Targeting and Ligand–Receptor Interactions: Development of functionalized nanocarriers for precise molecular recognition and enhanced cellular uptake.
- Extracellular Vesicles and Molecular Signaling: The role of exosomes and biomimetic vesicles in intercellular communication and their engineering for targeted molecular delivery.
- Intracellular Trafficking and Molecular Fate: Studies on endosomal escape, nuclear targeting, and the molecular processing of nanocarriers within the cell.
- Immuno-nanomedicine and Molecular Modulation: Strategies to modulate the molecular pathways of the immune system for vaccines and cancer immunotherapy.
- Molecular Diagnostics and Theranostics: Integration of molecular imaging probes with therapeutic agents for real-time monitoring of biological processes.
We invite original research articles and comprehensive reviews that advance our molecular-level understanding of nanomedicine. We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Current Issues in Molecular Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
