Dear Colleagues,
Recent advances in breast cancer surgery are increasingly being driven by technological innovation and a growing emphasis on precision and treatment de-escalation. Novel intraoperative imaging modalities, fluorescence-guided techniques, and innovative tumor and lymph node identification systems are redefining surgical standards, allowing surgeons to tailor procedures while minimizing morbidity. At the same time, improved biological understanding and multidisciplinary integration are fostering de-escalation strategies in both breast and axillary surgery without compromising oncologic safety. These developments represent a critical evolution in modern surgical oncology and align closely with the mission of Cancers to promote translational, clinical, and outcome-oriented research.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of emerging technologies in breast cancer surgery and their role in enabling precision-based and de-escalated surgical approaches. The collection will focus on innovations that improve surgical accuracy, optimize patient selection, reduce overtreatment, and enhance quality of life, while maintaining robust oncologic outcomes. The topic fits squarely within the journal’s scope by addressing clinically relevant advances with translational and multidisciplinary implications.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include, but need not be limited to, fluorescence-guided surgery (including indocyanine green applications), novel tumor and lymph node localization techniques, advances in sentinel lymph node mapping, surgical de-escalation, technology-driven surgical decision-making, reconstructive surgery, mini-invasive approaches, clinical outcomes, safety, cost-effectiveness, and future perspectives in breast cancer surgery.
