Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Steel and composite structures, characterized by high-strength materials and a variety of structural forms, have been successfully used in various buildings and structures for decades. In order to address the issues around the efficiency and durability of these structural applications, as well as their environmental and economic benefits, serious challenges are faced: the efficient use of resources, the maintenance and strengthening of structures, and their recycling and reuse. Such difficulties pose urgent demands on researchers and designers. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new advanced methods for the analysis and design of sustainable steel and composite structures. It is necessary to note that steel has a closed life cycle, and composite materials also improve the operational properties of the structures. This creates good conditions for the development of efficient and sustainable construction.

This Special Issue aims to presentat the latest methods for the analysis and design of sustainable steel and composite structures, improve the research of these structures using FEM and DI, and improve the maintenance and strengthening methods of these structures and their secondary uses. The topic is broad, covering all of the relevant issues in structural engineering. High-quality and original scientific articles related to the sustainability of structures, new calculation methods, structural experimental testing, design and operation, and construction are welcome.

We also welcome the submission of articles on topics ranging from life cycle assessment and recycling processes to the innovative design of advanced steel and composite structures. Articles should focus on factors that demonstrate the benefits of steel and composite structures, reduce environmental impacts, and increase resource efficiency.

The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Advanced behavior and calculation methods of steel and composite structures;
  • High-performance steel and composite materials, and their applications in sustainable structural systems;
  • Development and application of new forms in steel and composite structures;
  • Durability design and degradation modeling of steel and composite structures;
  • Life cycle assessment of steel and composite structural systems;
  • Reuse and recycling technologies in steel and composite structures;
  • The role of international standards in sustainable structural engineering;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
