Dear Colleagues,
The construction sector is undergoing a critical transition toward sustainability, with increasing demand for materials that combine high performance with reduced environmental impact. Cement-based composites remain the backbone of modern infrastructure; however, their conventional formulations are associated with significant carbon emissions. This Special Issue aims to explore recent advances in high-performance and low-carbon cement-based composites for building applications.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, innovative binder systems (e.g., supplementary cementitious materials, alkali-activated materials, and geopolymers), as well as advanced cement-based composites such as ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), high-performance concrete (HPC), and engineered cementitious composites (ECC). Research on performance enhancement through nanomaterials, fibers, and multi-scale design approaches is highly encouraged.
In addition, studies focusing on durability, long-term behavior, and resilience under extreme environments (e.g., freeze–thaw, chloride exposure, and high temperatures) are welcome. Contributions on repair, strengthening, and renovation techniques using sustainable cement-based materials are also of interest. Submissions addressing life-cycle assessment, carbon reduction strategies, digital design and fabrication, and practical engineering applications will be particularly valued.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
