Dear Colleagues,
Neurological disorders, especially neurodegenerative diseases, pose a significant burden in terms of quality of life, disability, and mortality. Fortunately, the field of neurology has recently undergone a substantial evolution in the timely and precise identification of such disorders, thanks to the development of novel diagnostic techniques based on skin samples. This approach allows for the detection of pathological and molecular biomarkers for different neurological diseases. This has certainly been the case for synucleinopathies, which include common neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, as well as Multiple System Atrophy and Pure Autonomic Failure (PAF).
In addition, skin samples have recently been used for the diagnosis of tauopathies such as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Alzheimer’s disease, where markers of amyloid and tau pathology have been incorporated into diagnostic criteria. Skin samples have also been used to detect specific biomarkers in genetic diseases such as Fabry disease and amyloidosis.
Among the new methods used to study skin samples, we should include indirect immunofluorescence, which makes it possible to identify specific epitopes through the use of primary antibodies, and Seeding Amplification Assays, which enable the detection of pathological protein aggregates by exploiting their seeding activity.
The aim of this Special Issue is to bridge the technical knowledge of skin-sample-based techniques—particularly novel methods—with clinical experience, in order to promote awareness of these new approaches among experienced clinicians who may benefit from them in their practice.
This Special Issue accepts original research on the technical and methodological aspects of novel diagnostic techniques using skin samples in neurological disorders, as well as more clinically oriented studies assessing their practical application. Meta-analyses or original works related to the diagnostic accuracy of these techniques are particularly welcome. We also accept case reports in which diagnostic methods based on skin samples have contributed to reaching a diagnosis, as well as opinions, mini-reviews, and perspectives.
