Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
You are kindly invited to submit original research and review articles to this new Special Issue dedicated to the most recent developments in the field of aptamers and aptasensors. It has been almost 30 years since the invention of systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) methodology and the description of the first aptamers, but unfortunately, aptamer development still lags behind the progress made in the analytical methodologies that employ them. This Special Issue aims to gather the latest advances in aptamer selection techniques and the rational or semirational introduction of modifications to improve their affinity and specificity and enhance their performance. It also aims to showcase novel applications of aptamers alone or in combination with nanomaterials in fields where they are already traditionally deployed (environmental and food monitoring), but also in emerging ones such as medical diagnostics and therapeutics, with a special emphasis on their employment in complex matrices with minimal sample preparation. It is my hope that this Special Issue will provide a forum for the exchange of ground-breaking ideas on aptamers and their applications and will inspire the scientific community to further investigate aptamer structure, rational design, and integration into biosensing platforms.
