Background Introduction: The human brain is the most complex known organ, yet it is built from relatively simplistic components. Large Language Models, a major trend in current research, are able to approach this complexity by combining many smaller operating units, rather like the brain. However, while recent progress has been unprecedented, it is still difficult to describe even LLMs as intelligent. Where does intelligence start, and what does it start with?
In the biological world, even single cells can exhibit some types of behaviour, and those in the insect world can appear to be intelligent through collective acts. These simpler models can be described mathematically and are often used in other, more practical domains. Therefore, given that the human brain has evolved new components and layers, achieving the greatest cognitive ability of any animal, is it possible that earlier structures or cells have been built upon to create new, more intelligent ones? Could this be found in DNA itself? Could this type of evolution be traced and used to build more intelligent systems?
Aim and Scope: This Special Issue aims to answer these questions. The goal is to build intelligence through structure, but only by using simplistic processing units. We are interested in papers that describe new models or ideas focused on this approach, excluding Large Language Models, where inherent intelligence should allow for fewer processing units. The components should also be applicable in a generic sense, meaning that dynamics are likely to be key. Does a different configuration give a different behaviour? The Special Issue is interested in fundamental theories about this question, as well as applications where new designs have been used in practice. The design should be able to exhibit some type of intelligent or cognitive ability.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Biomimetics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
