Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue entitled “Proteases: Structure–Function Relationships, Molecular Mechanisms, and Emerging Applications”. Proteases are essential enzymes that break down proteins by hydrolyzing the peptide bonds that link amino acids together and play important roles in numerous biological processes. Proteases are also widely used in food processing, medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, and industrial manufacturing. Understanding the relationships among their sources, molecular structures, catalytic properties, biological functions, and practical applications is therefore an important and continuously developing area of research.
This Special Issue aims to bring together recent advances in both fundamental and applied protease research. It will provide a platform for studies addressing protease discovery, structure, function, regulation, catalytic mechanisms, kinetics, substrate specificity, and modification. The Special Issue will also highlight emerging technologies for the identification, characterization, and application of proteases. By connecting fundamental biological understanding with practical applications, this collection seeks to encourage interdisciplinary discussion and promote further advances in protease science.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Discovery and characterization of novel proteases;
- Natural, microbial, plant, and animal sources of proteases;
- Protease structure–function relationships;
- Catalytic mechanisms, kinetics, and substrate specificity;
- Protease engineering, modification, and optimization;
- Emerging technologies in protease research;
- Proteases in health, disease, and medicine;
- Protease inhibitors and their applications;
- Food processing and agricultural applications;
- Biotechnological and environmental applications;
- Industrial production and manufacturing applications.
I hope that this Special Issue will provide a valuable forum for researchers from different disciplines to share their latest findings and perspectives. I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
