Dear Colleagues,
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and metabolic disorders (MDs) are the leading causes of mortality around the world. Although the role of lipid metabolism in CVDs and MDs has been revealed to inform the development of therapeutic approaches over the past few decades, other pathogenic factors and mechanisms have not been fully understood. For instance, the focus on immune cells identified multiple novel subpopulations in myeloid cells and lymphocytes, which contribute to the pathogenesis of CVDs and MDs. In addition, hormone signaling pathways are also reported to play a crucial role in shaping the physiology and pathophysiology of various metabolic diseases. However, as a novel concept, the immune cell phenotype and function driven by intracellular metabolic shifts (immunometabolism) in the pathogenesis has not been fully studied. Furthermore, studies on hormone signaling in CVDs and MDs mainly focused on certain hormones (insulin, cortisol, estrogen, angiotensin, brain-natriuretic peptide, etc.), while the regulatory machinery remains unclear.
Therefore, this Special Issue calls for studies providing novel mechanistic insights and technological advances for studying immunometabolism and hormone signaling pathways in CVDs (Heart failure, Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke, Heart Failure, Arrhythmias, Valve Diseases, Atherosclerosis, etc.) and MDs (Obesity, Diabetes, Fatty liver diseases, Mitochondrial Diseases, etc.).
Topics of interest for this call for papers include, but are not limited to, the following:
- The investigation of metabolism-driven immune cell differentiation and dysfunction.
- The characterization of novel hormone signaling pathways as biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
- Phenotype switching in immune cells and other cell types regulated by nutrients and specific metabolites.
- The crosstalk between immune cells and other cardiac cells under distinctive metabolic status.
- The synergistic effect of immune cells or hormone signaling pathways.
- Diet-induced metabolic changes and hormone secretion in the pathogenesis.
