Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The continuous development of rechargeable battery technologies is essential to address the growing demand for high energy density, long cycle life, and enhanced safety in energy storage systems across diverse applications, including electric transportation, portable electronics, and grid-scale storage. Among the various components, the cathode plays a determining role in governing the energy output, stability, and overall electrochemical performance of the cell. In recent years, substantial progress has been made in the synthesis of advanced cathode materials, as well as in their structural tuning and mechanism investigation. Concurrently, the integration of advanced characterization techniques has enabled in-depth insights into ion transport dynamics, phase transitions, and failure mechanisms. With the emergence of next-generation energy storage systems including lithium-ion batteries and beyond, the design and optimization of high-performance cathodes has become increasingly critical.

This Special Issue aims to collect original research and review articles focusing on the synthesis, surface or structural modification, and mechanistic understanding of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries and beyond. Both fundamental investigations and application-oriented studies are welcome.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Rational synthesis of advanced cathode materials such as single-crystal layered oxides, polyanionic compounds, and conversion-type materials for lithium-ion batteries and beyond (sodium-ion, zinc-ion batteries, etc.)
  • Surface coating, bulk doping, and interface optimization strategies
  • Advanced structural, spectroscopic, and electrochemical characterization methods
  • Reaction mechanisms, ion transport kinetics, and degradation pathway studies
  • In situ and operando techniques for dynamic process tracking
  • Data-driven approaches for materials discovery and performance optimization

We look forward to your contributions to this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Batteries is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
