Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Blood/hematologic cancers begin in blood-forming tissues (e.g., bone marrow,lymph system, and blood cells) and were once considered incurable cancers. Thanks to modern-day management, patients with hematologic cancers are seeing remissions and living longer, or even achieving cures. New clinical and scientific findings lead to the advancement in diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers and the development of more efficacious and less toxic therapeutic approaches. We are now at a position where we need to develop these findings into preclinical and clinical outcomes and therefore, we provide a platform for prompt communication of original and innovative research findings associated to blood cancers.

This Special Issue welcomes submissions presented in the form of original, review, and case report articles related to hematologic cancers.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

Chemotherapy and radiation are often accompanied by complications such as intestinal mucositis. The aim of this study was to assess by immunohistochemical assay the consequences of epirubicin-based therapy applied to onco-hematological patients, on the mucosal cells that undergo apoptosis and on the tight junction proteins, immediately before and after a short time of chemotherapy administration. We assessed the protein expression and distribution of the pro-apoptotic Bax, anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and effector Caspase-3 as key proteins in apoptosis pathways and the changes in immunopositivity of Claudin-1 and ZO-1 tight junction proteins. Results show that the Bcl-2 family is involved in intestinal damage via Caspase-3 dependent apoptosis of epithelial cells. Additionally, the intestinal mucositis activates other injurious pathways through a dramatic drop in Claudin-1 and ZO-1 expressions, contributing for a while to a structural and functional integrity disruption of the intestinal epithelium. Multiple myeloma (MM) is one of the most widespread hematological cancers. It is characterized by a clonal proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow and by the overproduction of monoclonal proteins. In recent years, the survival rate of patients with multiple myeloma has increased significantly due to the use of transplanted stem cells and of the new therapeutic agents that have significantly increased the survival rate, but it still cannot be completely cured and therefore the development of new therapeutic products is needed. Moreover, many patients have various side effects and face the development of drug resistance to current therapies. The purpose of this review is to highlight the bioactive active compounds (flavonoids) and herbal extracts which target dysregulated signaling pathway in MM, assessed by in vitro and in vivo experiments or clinical studies, in order to explore their healing potential targeting multiple myeloma. Mechanistically, they demonstrated the ability to promote cell cycle blockage and apoptosis or autophagy in cancer cells, as well as inhibition of proliferation/migration/tumor progression, inhibition of angiogenesis in the tumor vascular network. Current research provides valuable new information about the ability of flavonoids to enhance the apoptotic effects of antineoplastic drugs, thus providing viable therapeutic options based on combining conventional and non-conventional therapies in MM therapeutic protocols.
