Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Restorative dentistry and dental biomaterials are undergoing a period of rapid transformation driven by advances in materials science, digital technologies, and an increasing emphasis on evidence-based and sustainable clinical practice. Contemporary restorative solutions are no longer evaluated solely on their ability to replace lost tooth structure, but on a broader set of criteria that reflect modern healthcare priorities centered on quality, performance, and sustainability.

Quality refers to the biological compatibility, safety, and clinical reliability of materials and techniques, encompassing patient-centered outcomes, longevity of restorations, and alignment with high standards of care. Performance addresses the mechanical, physical, and functional behavior of restorative materials under real clinical conditions, including wear resistance, bonding effectiveness, esthetics, and long-term stability, as well as their interaction with digital workflows and minimally invasive approaches. Sustainability introduces a critical, forward-looking dimension, integrating environmental responsibility, life-cycle assessment of materials, ethical manufacturing, and the role of restorative dentistry within green and circular healthcare models. This Special Issue aims to bring together high-quality original research, systematic and narrative reviews, and clinically oriented studies that explore these three interrelated dimensions in depth. We seek to incorporate the full spectrum of contemporary international research efforts that contribute decisively to shaping restorative dentistry that is scientifically sound, clinically relevant, and responsive to the evolving societal and professional demands of modern healthcare systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
