Advancements in Prosthetic Dentistry: Materials, Techniques, Ethics, and Sustainable Clinical Applications

This special issue belongs to the section “Prosthodontics“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Prosthetic dentistry is experiencing a period of rapid evolution, driven by advances in biomaterials science, digital technologies, and evidence-based restorative protocols. Contemporary prosthodontics extends beyond the traditional focus on material durability and technical precision; it now encompasses broader considerations such as clinical efficiency, patient-reported outcomes, ethical decision-making, and the environmental sustainability of prosthetic interventions. With rising patient expectations and healthcare systems requiring higher levels of accountability and quality assurance, the need to integrate professionalism, quality management, and responsible innovation into prosthetic practice becomes increasingly urgent. This interdisciplinary convergence positions prosthetic dentistry as a key field for advancing both scientific knowledge and high-value clinical care.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together high-quality research that advances the scientific, clinical, ethical, and sustainability dimensions of prosthetic dentistry. By examining the performance of contemporary materials, comparing traditional and digital fabrication methods, and evaluating clinical outcomes through strong methodological approaches, this Special Issue seeks to contribute to the journal’s broader mission of promoting excellence in dental science and clinical application. The inclusion of work on ethics, environmental impact, and the professional standards shaping prosthetic practice further aligns with the journal’s commitment to supporting holistic, evidence-based, and socially responsible developments in oral healthcare. Through this comprehensive lens, the Special Issue aims to broaden the dialogue on how modern prosthodontics can deliver high-quality, equitable, and sustainable patient care.

The Special Issue welcomes contributions across a wide range of topics, including but not limited to, the following:

  • Innovations in prosthetic biomaterials (ceramics, polymers, hybrid materials, bioinspired substrates).
  • Advances in digital workflows: CAD/CAM, 3D printing, AI-assisted design, and hybrid digital–analog techniques.
  • Clinical protocols and outcome evaluation in fixed, removable, and implant-supported prostheses.
  • Quality assurance, safety standards, and performance indicators in prosthetic dentistry.
  • Ethical considerations in prosthetic treatment planning and material selection.
  • Sustainability and environmental impact of prosthetic workflows and materials.
  • Patient-reported outcomes, satisfaction, functionality, and esthetics.
  • Economic and operational aspects of prosthetic care, including cost-effectiveness analyses.
  • Interdisciplinary approaches integrating prosthetics with periodontics, implantology, and oral rehabilitation.

For this Special Issue, we welcome original research articles and reviews.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Prosthesis is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
