Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The breeding and improvement of tropical and subtropical ornamental plants faces numerous and often unique challenges in the areas of acquisition, characterization, preservation, propagation, and accession integrity in germplasm collections, as well as the limited availability or applicability of genetic information and technical tools, respectively more widely available in commodity crops or model plant species. Advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) and its applications, including genotype by sequencing (GBS) and transcriptome analysis, biotechnology including CRISPR-based gene editing, plant culture and propagation techniques, offer new methods and approaches for improving the management, breeding, trait development and production of tropical and subtropical ornamental plants.

This Special Issue will focus on recent advances in the "Genetics and Germplasm Resources of Cultivated Tropical and Subtropical Ornamentals". We welcome any research papers or reviews in this or related areas, including those which highlight novel approaches for germplasm building, management and genotypic or phenotypic characterization, serve as model examples of efficient cultivar development or production platforms, or describe the identification or advancement of desired ornamental, horticultural, disease resistance or other traits based on the application of NGS information. We are also interested in unique studies on chromosome composition, genome structure, gene function or expression, gene editing, gene delivery or other new technologies. The collection of research papers in this Issue will together represent reference material for incorporating new approaches and technologies for overcoming research challenges to promote and advance tropical and subtropical ornamental plant cultivar development and production.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Agronomy is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
