Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Cereals are among the most important crops for human nutrition and food security, providing a major source of energy, carbohydrates, proteins, dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds. However, the nutritional and technological quality of cereals is strongly influenced by genotype, environmental conditions, agronomic practices, post-harvest management and processing technologies. Climate change, increasing environmental stresses, soil degradation and the need to reduce agricultural inputs are creating new challenges for maintaining not only cereal yield, but also the nutritional and technological quality of grain and cereal-based products.
In recent years, increasing attention has therefore been devoted to innovative approaches aimed at enhancing cereal quality while improving the sustainability and resilience of production systems. Agronomic strategies, including optimized fertilization, irrigation management, crop diversification, intercropping, the use of biostimulants and beneficial microorganisms, precision agriculture and other innovative cultivation practices, can significantly influence grain composition and nutritional value. These strategies, when combined with innovations beyond the cultivation phase, including post-harvest management, storage, milling, fermentation, biotechnological approaches and novel processing technologies, can preserve, enhance or exploit the nutritional and technological potential of cereals.
The Special Issue ‘Agronomic Drivers of Cereal Nutritional and Technological Quality Enhancement’ aims to identify innovative strategies capable of improving cereal nutritional and technological quality. Particular attention will be given to the role of agronomic practices and their interactions with genotype and environmental conditions, as well as to innovative approaches applied after harvest that can contribute to enhancing grain quality, functionality and nutritional value. The identification of integrated strategies able to combine agricultural sustainability, crop resilience and high-quality cereal production will be a key objective of this Special Issue.
Therefore, this Special Issue will present original research and review articles on innovative approaches to improving the nutritional, functional and technological quality of cereals and cereal-based products. Contributions may cover advancements from cultivation practices and breeding strategies to post-harvest management, processing technologies and emerging innovations, with particular emphasis on integrated field-to-food approaches that enhance cereal quality, sustainability and functionality.
