Dear Colleagues,
Legumes are essential for global food security, yet modern cultivars often possess a narrow genetic base, making them vulnerable to climate change and emerging diseases. To overcome these challenges, we must unlock the potential of legume germplasms to broaden genetic diversity and the transfer of beneficial traits into elite cultivars.
We invite you to contribute to this Special Issue, which will bridge the critical gap between genebank conservation and practical plant breeding. We kindly invite authors to submit original research, reviews, and short communications highlighting cutting-edge approaches including, but not limited to, the following:
- Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of legume germplasm collections;
- Identification and mapping of novel QTLs/genes for biotic and abiotic stress resistance;
- Application of genomic selection and marker-assisted backcrossing in pre-breeding programs;
- Utilization of wild relatives and landraces for the introgression of beneficial traits;
- Advancements in high-throughput phenotyping methodologies for evaluating legume diversity;
- Studies exploring the genetic basis of nutritional quality and end-use functionality;
- Evaluations of germplasm for enhanced sustainability, including improved NUE and root architecture;
- Agricultural methods and optimization techniques that are valuable in germplasm characterization.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Agronomy is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
