Cover Story: Cow live weight and capacity have a strong association with lactational and reproductive performance. This study examined the relationships among the stature (height and leg length), capacity (girth), and live weight of 40 dairy cows from birth to maturity (52 months of age). A von Bertalanffy growth function was applied for each measure. Stature measures had strong associations between birth and maturity (R2 > 0.90), while girth and live weight had lower associations between birth and maturity (R2 = 0.88 and 0.82, respectively). Mature height was achieved earlier (by 24 months) than mature girth (by 27 months). Capacity growth is most sensitive to environmental input until 27 months of age, therefore, sufficient nutrition is required to maximise capacity. View this paper
