Cover Story: The FDA’s recent approval for resmetirom in the United States serves as a milestone achievement in developing treatments for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a disease with a rich history of candidates failing to achieve clinical efficacy. However, with much still unknown about the molecular mechanisms of this chronic liver disorder and the long-term efficacy and safety of this groundbreaking treatment, investigators continue to pursue all avenues of therapeutics, both novel and re-purposed, to identify additional treatment strategies for MASH. Here, we discuss alternative options amid late-phase clinical trial investigation of resmetirom to hopefully contribute to the ranks of MASH therapeutics that may contribute alongside it.
