Cover Story: Single crystal gold nanowires were mechanically bent using the custom-built scanning force microscope SFINX. The three-dimensional intensity distribution in the vicinity of the Au 111 Bragg peak was recorded by varying the photon energy of the incident X-ray beam instead of rocking the sample, thus avoiding any goniometer vibrations that may induce artefacts or sample damaging. This technique enabled us to track changes in the three-dimensional intensity distribution during the mechanical loading from which the actual nanowire deformation was inferred. This in-situ multi-wavelength coherent X-ray diffraction approach is a major step forward compared to in-situ nano-mechanics in combination with CDI. View this paper
