Cover Story: The Philippines is part of the Thalassemia Belt. The recent addition of hemoglobinopathy newborn screening, including thalassemias, to the existing newborn screening program has been a resounding success. The program is still growing and currently serves over 90% of the 2 million newborns born annually in more than 7400 hospitals and birthing centers across the archipelago.
