Cover Story: Ophidiomycosis, caused by Ophidiomyces ophidiicola (Oo), is an emerging threat to snakes, yet its epidemiology in Europe remains underexplored. We investigated Oo distribution across wild snakes in Italy, integrating both recent field samples and museum specimens. We surveyed 423 snakes of 17 species from 17 regions, detecting Oo in 32 snakes from five species. Acknowledging the non-standardised sampling, our data highlight Oo presence in diverse ecological zones, particularly affecting semi-aquatic species like Natrix tessellata. Oo Clade I, found mainly in museum specimens, indicates a historical presence; Clade II dominated recent samples, and one case suggested co-infection. Our results highlight the importance of continuous surveillance and standardised sampling to better understand snake fungal disease ecology and epidemiology. View this paper
