Cover Story: Bioluminescent fungi, a fascinating group within the order Agaricales, have captivated human interest for millennia. They are represented by five evolutionary lineages, encompassing 132 known species distributed all over the world. This review explores the remarkable diversity, global distribution, and evolutionary pathways of these fungi. Capable of emitting a greenish light via the conserved Caffeic Acid Cycle (CAC)—the only fully encodable eukaryotic bioluminescent system—these fungi are predominantly found in biodiverse subtropical forests. They exhibit fascinating evolutionary adaptations, having developed bioluminescence once, followed by multiple independent losses. Advances in biochemical and genetic research provide a deeper understanding of this fascinating luminous phenomenon. View this paper
