Cover Story: Since 1999, researchers have identified a total of 20 biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) producing known secondary metabolites (SMs) in Aspergillus fumigatus. This paper presents a historical timeline outlining the discovery of and scientific endeavors—including medium composition, genetic modification, and co-culture—to pair BGCs with their SMs in this species. Computational examination of 264 genomes of A. fumigatus suggests that more than 30 BGCs are yet to be characterized. We hope that this paper will inspire the development of further exploration and innovation in the study of undefined BGCs. View this paper
