Cover Story: One out of every ten Americans above the age of eighty experiences permanent visual impairment resulting from advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). While neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) accounts for only 15% of advanced AMD cases, it is responsible for more than 80% of all vision loss secondary to the disease. Low vision rehabilitation (LVR) can help visually impaired individuals optimize their remaining vision and improve their independence. Our study examined LVR referral patterns for patients with nAMD and demonstrated that many experienced a significant improvement in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) after completing an LVR evaluation. Despite this benefit, fewer than one in five patients received a referral for LVR services. Further initiatives are needed to improve the rate at which patients with nAMD access LVR services.
