Cover Story: The time evolution of complex living systems depends on the interactions among the active particles themselves (inner interactions) and between the active particles and the environment (inner–outer interactions). The discrete thermostatted kinetic theory for active particles facilitates the mathematical modeling of systems composed of active particles whose microscopic state includes space, velocity and activity (strategy) variables that can attain discrete values. The interactions are defined by interaction rates and stochastic games. A Gaussian-type thermostat term is introduced for taking into consideration the inner–outer interactions. The paper presents new discrete thermostatted non-homogeneous frameworks, and the role of the stochastic game theory is demonstrated by reviewing a model for vehicular traffic and a model for pedestrian dynamics. View this paper
