Cover Story: This article addresses the use of cognitive tests, including intelligence tests, in dyslexia evaluations, from the perspective of both the past and the present. As part of dyslexia evaluations, cognitive tests have been used to document specificity and unexpectedness, two constructs that have been associated with dyslexia since the late nineteenth century. In addition, we review contemporary debates around the need for standardized cognitive testing in dyslexia evaluations. After examining different perspectives, we conclude that cognitive tests are useful and can contribute important information that contributes to an accurate and informed diagnosis of dyslexia. View this paper
