Cover Story: Concentration difficulties and negative attention biases are significant cognitive and emotional vulnerabilities in depression; however, their interactions remain unclear, hindering our understanding of the disorder’s risk mechanisms. This study expands upon existing depression models by exploring how rumination connects dysregulated cognitive and emotional processing. Using an electrophysiological working memory task, it was found that an analytical form of rumination, reflection, was linked to reduced attention to negative, rather than neutral, distractors. However, this reduction in attention to distractors did not correspond to an improvement in memory performance. These results may indicate an adverse effect of rumination on the efficiency of neurocognitive function. View this paper
