Cover Story: Men seek significantly less help for mental health issues compared to women, even when experiencing similar symptom burden. In an anonymous online study of 716 German-speaking men and women, we examined mental health symptoms, masculinity ideologies, and possible interactions to analyze their predictive value for psychotherapy use among men and women who report suffering from psychological distress. Our findings support previous research suggesting that adherence to traditional masculinity ideologies may prevent men from seeking professional help for mental health issues. Significant interaction effects between mental health symptoms and traditional masculinity ideologies further indicate that men with high adherence to traditional masculinity ideologies seek professional help only when experiencing elevated symptoms.
