Cover Story: Utilising load-velocity profiling (LVP) data to predict one repetition maximum (1RM) can be a useful tool for optimising sessional barbell load within strength and conditioning. Several methods currently exist for predicting 1RM from LVP data in free-weight exercises, often resulting in large systematic biases when compared with measured 1RM. This research, therefore, adopts a novel approach to 1RM prediction that utilises velocity at 80% 1RM and a combination of interpolation and extrapolation. Comparisons were made between linear and quadratic modeling and ballistic and non-ballistic exercise to determine the most valid method to estimate maximum load capabilities in strength-trained men.
